eight questions

The twelve values say what stance a text takes. The sixteen areas of life say what it speaks about. Both stay on the surface. An address about giving and a prosperity gospel both land on "money: framed as a good", for opposite reasons.

This page asks underneath. Eight questions that can be put to every tradition in the same words. What is measured is what the text claims, not whether it is right: "in need of redemption" is a statement about how a text sees things, not about people.

Where all answer alike

25 traditions with enough texts

On 3 of the eight questions, at least two thirds of the traditions with enough texts give the same answer. What counts is each tradition's most frequent answer, and only traditions with at least five analysed texts are counted.

to one's own fellow believers · also to kindred traditions, but not to all · to every human being, regardless of faith · also to animals, plants, and all of creation

Where is the text's criticism directed?

at one's own community and at oneself · at others, at society, at other groups · explicitly at both · the text does not criticise

How certain the assignment is

A text that states its diagnosis is a different thing from one where it has to be inferred. Every assignment therefore carries a note about that. A question stays empty when the text offers nothing on it. A gap is better than a guessed answer. 1 = inferred, the text does not say it explicitly, 2 = clearly discernible, 3 = stated explicitly, central to the text.
